Shelter Bar - Story Bridge Hotel
The project involved the Extension and Renovation of the Existing Story Bridge Hotel. It included the renovation of the 4 levels of the existing hotel. The extension consisted of the addition of two new bars, the shelter bar and the outback bar and grill, a centrally placed kitchen services these bars. All back of house facilities have been rationalized and are located along a service spine which also gives access to the Administration level above.
A new bottle shop, a gaming room and new beer garden have been provided as well as the renovation of the existing Deery’s restaurant and kitchen.
The design concept contrasts the new modern extension with the existing heritage structures of the bridge pylons, the existing hotel and the blast shelters.
We have incorporated these historical features of the site into the new building. The building structure and finishes have been pulled back from the pylons isolating them as individuals within the space. They have been numbered to further draw attention to them.
The blast shelter walls have been exposed to view and their original volume exposed. Any insertions into these spaces have been made obviously modern. The design for the interiors has drawn on the industrial aesthetic of the Story Bridge with its structural steel framing.
Total cost 4.5Mill, finished in 2005.
Awards:
The design recycles the existing masonry structure and adds new open lightweight alfresco spaces to compliment and contrast each hotel space to match volume and material with proposed use.
The entry/gaming/public bar and kitchen were relocated to take advantage of the inward looking heavy brick existing enclosure. While the new lightweight high volume open spaces were designed for the sport bar/gaming/kids play and smorgasboard spaces.
This highlighted a large diversification of space and atmosphere for patrons to experience. The existing bland façade to Wynnum road has been reworked to be more inviting with a new roof portico, landscape and light entry giving the façade recess with light and shade. The existing bottle shop has been integrated in the design with similar material and finishes.
While not a heritage building the existing façade has been retained and renovated in the existing established streetscape.
The client brief indicated a diverse range of use with specialist spaces for:
The end result is a family community hotel with a range of different experiences from morning mums kid play to late night gaming in the casino.

The existing heritage listed hotel was built in the early 1800’s and has not been renovated since the 1960’s.
Our brief was to maintain and develop the existing pub character of this classic West End hotel.
The existing ‘public’ bar has been retained in stage 1 with the 60’s feel but now reopened to address the streetscape corner.
The rear of the hotel has been developed into a traditional outdoor beer garden, an opportunity identified by the client to encourage a family dining opportunity.
The existing lounge bar has been reconfigured to a noise-controlled music environment below.
The design direction has taken advantage of the two 60’s brick additions to each end of the hotel by creating large openings into the interior to create interest and mystery from the streetscape.
The hotel clearly reads as a heritage façade with a connection to the beer garden beyond created by the openings encouraging patrons to enter and investigate.
The hotel has a “stage three” yet to be completed incorporating the corner bar and additional of further material finishes.
